Solar Charger - Connect to Battery only, Not a Charging Source

Question:

Jeff, love your YouTube channel. I have been told not to connect my outboard motor alternator/generator to a Solar MPPT charge controller. Why?

Answer:

Hi Larry,

Thanks for the reach out, solar controllers are meant to be connected to your battery and not a charging source like an alternator or even a battery charger. Your outboard alternator is connected to your engine starter solenoid, which is in turn connected to your battery switch and then connected to your battery. Connect your controller to the battery via a fuse. - Jeff
