What Is the Best Place to Mount a Solar Controller on My Boat?

Question:

Hey Jeff,

I am the owner of a Beneteau 34, and have just purchased 2 x 70 watt panels to mount on my Bimini. Each with their own mppt controller (victron 75/15) because of shading issues with the boom. Should the controllers be mounted closer to the battery, or the panels? And should they be wired with a disconnect at the battery?  Thanks, been watching your videos for a long time and have learned SO MUCH! - Darren

Answer:

Hi Darren,

Thanks for the reach out. Try to mount the solar controller as close to the batteries as possible. Make sure your controller wiring is connected to the unswitched distribution and fused. I don't have experience with solar disconnects and cannot comment.  - Jeff
