Jeff Cot here from Pacific Yacht System. We've got another installment of Tech Talk. We've got a question from a fellow boater named Lewis. Lewis asks, "What makes for a successful electrical or electronic project on a boat?" All right, so the standard answer and the guess for many of us would be the installer, right? Just installation. If you've got a good installation, everything's going to go well. Well, actually, here at PYS, we take a little bit broader approach. And I'm going to tell you my own philosophy for doing electrical electronic projects. The first thing I think you've got to start off is what are your goals? I see it all too often. people do things they don't need. They thought they wanted it because they've heard other people do it and they were trying to achieve a pro solve a problem they either misunderstood or doing something that really didn't give them a benefit. So, first of all, I think you always want to start off to make sure you have a successful project on your boat is what are your goals, right? Don't get too early into the how, but understand really what you're trying to achieve. Because if you tell people what you're trying to achieve in terms of your objectives, people will be creative in finding solutions to meet those objectives as opposed to telling them what you want done on your boat, which is just a way of doing reaching an objective. The next one is creating and coming up with a solution that meets your goals. And that's actually the reality is on boats. There are many many many different ways of meeting an objective. So this is where you as a bone owner get to have choice. You want to listen out and what are the different approaches to solving the the objective that you have. So that first was goal. Second is basically the solution, right? The design figuring out a solution that's going to meet your objective. Next after that is once you have an idea of what what you're going to do or how you're going to do it is choosing the right components for that solution. Right? So the right quality, the right price point and again cheapest is rarely the right answer and most expensive is rarely the right answer. So there's a lot of choice and you've got to figure out life expectancy of the product, reputation of the product, ease of use. Uh all these different factors come in uh in choosing products. Next is of course the installation and the installation needs to be done to code. Uh it needs to be done uh safely, no shortcuts and it's got to meet basically the design. So following what you intended to do versus doing what you're doing on the fly is always better, right? You can build a house simply from your mind as you go along, but it's always better to build anything from plans. So having a plan and installing to plan is really really good. The next one is going to be commissioning. Commissioning is often overlooked. Many people stop the project after they installed it and call it a success. It's really a hope and pray and they're doing that simply because they want to walk off the project. They don't have enough time. They've spent too much time on the project and they just hope that whatever they did is going to work. They figure it is and simply walk away. Commissioning is making sure that all the right settings are there, testing different scenarios and that the behaviors that you expected are going to manifest itself after you've done the work. And this is really important because it really reduces the likelihood of coming back on the boat for service calls when things don't seem to work well. And the last bit which is probably as important as everything else is having proper documentation, meaning diagrams of what actually got built on your boat so that it is actually done and it's easy to service later on. Because maybe that service company is no longer to be there. Maybe your boat is in another area. And if you can have diagrams of what got built on your boat and you can hand them over to either someone in a marina that is helping you and might be another technician, there's going to be a lot of value there. So to recap, you want to make sure you know what you're trying to solve as opposed to providing a solution. Coming up with a solution that meets those, and there's always many different ways of meeting a solution, choosing the right amount of components uh for that job, right? Both in quality and cost. having the job done right and to code, meaning don't take shortcuts and don't have no bravado and make sure that you're not being too creative in your solution making and you're actually doing it properly. Commissioning and testing the system so it behaves the way you expected. And lastly, documentation as build diagrams that reflect what actually got done on the boat. That's how a pro would do it. That's how we do it. And if you're tackling the project on your own, I think you should take those six steps and apply them to your project and be really curious when you're trying to solve a problem and finding out different solutions of doing that and so that you don't end up doing something you didn't need to do.
