Hi everyone, Jeff Cote here from Pacific Yacht System with another installment of Tech Talk. We've got a question from a fellow owner named Mark. Mark asked, "How does a properly-designed electrical system save money over time?" Obviously, I'm biased, but I'm going to tell you what we do and why you should maybe want to consider when you're shopping around why you would want to consider these things and how these things might might help you in the future. So, if you've got a properly-designed electrical system, what are the advantages of that for yourself? Well, one of them for sure is that your batteries are probably going to last longer because it's they're probably going to be sized for the right loads that are anticipated. There's nothing worse of having too small of a battery bank that is working too hard, and you don't want to have too much too big of a battery bank than you're not making use of, right? So, finding that sweet spot is really important, and that's where how you would save money is by choosing a battery bank that is appropriate for your needs and for your boat. The other thing, too, is you want to make sure that in the consideration of designing the electrical system, the alternators on your boat, either singular or plural, are not overworked and they're sized to actually meet the battery bank requirements and your load requirements. Like, what are you doing every day? How quickly can you recharge? And take into consideration maybe your solar and so that your alternators are going to have a longer life, and we can do that with external regulators, with temperature sensors, and all this stuff. The other one, too, that's really popular and I've said life had some emotional moments and connections with boat owners is reducing your generator run time. I've had boat owners that run their generators 12 hours a day, 8 hours a day. We came on board, designed an electrical system that was actually for their needs, where their generator run time was maybe like an hour and a half in the morning, an hour and a half at night. And to go from 12 hours to 3 hours of generator runtime is a completely different boating experience. You know, if I was going to run my generator for 12 hours, I would almost want to run it for 24 cuz at that point I just want it to be background noise. But if you want quiet and peacefulness in an anchorage and no vibration, no smoke, having your generator run less and having high output chargers connected to that generator, again, is going to save a lot of money on your generator and also peace and quiet for the boaters. The other one, too, of course, if you've got a good electrical system and that's a huge proponent of what we believe in, is you're going to have fewer emergency service calls. Service calls are generally not going to be cheap and you're really going to have maybe the people you would want on board because the people that are readily available, they're not going to be maybe the best person on your boat for what you're looking for. So reducing the number of urgent service calls is also a really good way to keep your cost down. Then, if you've got an electrical system that was done properly, big fan that what we had do is as-built diagrams. We always propose it to clients. So we suggest that you make sure that your electrical system that you've done for your boat has good schematics so that when you sell your boat in the future, someone else is going to be able to see that value and make sure and have it vetted very quickly by other people. And so yeah, look at this. This is done right. This is done to code. This is done properly and then it's going to help in the transaction of selling that boat, either moving those faster or maybe potentially even selling it for a little bit more. And I would say probably of all these benefits, the one that is probably the most immediate is having an electrical system with schematics is that it makes troubleshooting of the system much easier. And it doesn't even need to be with a technician. Like I always say to people, like sometimes we're in an anchorage and you might have someone you might be in over your head with the problem, but you might have a fellow boater that is quite tech-savvy and if you can give them that schematic and you might be far away from a service area they'll be able to help you and diagnose and figure out the problem much faster and again that would reduce not maybe your direct cost but your stress cost of having a better electrical system. So those would be sort of the things that matter and why some boaters choose to invest in having a a safe and reliable electrical system on their boat and in the long run when you think about it over a 10 year period it will make for a more peaceful and less expensive boating experience than having sort of an electrical system that's sort of like hogwash of all different things that they're not in tune and so if you've got a long sort of cycle ahead of you with your boat in terms of ownership then it does make sense to invest in electrical system that is going to make your boating experience be simply more pleasant because it's reliable and safe.
