Should I Fuse a Starting Circuit?

Question:

Hi I have a Catalina 30 Mk II with a universal 25 motor the original battery wiring is #4 awg what would you recommend for battery fusing . And do you carry a product that I could use. Regards Alan James

Answer:

By ABYC standards, starting circuits do not require a fuse.  If you decided to fuse your circuit, you’d need to know the cranking amps of your starter, probably 100 – 150 amps. Then you’d choose a fuse size that won’t cause nuisance tripping., like 1.5 times the max cranking current. Lastly, you’d make sure your battery wire to starter can handle that current 1.5 current rating. Your #4 wire might be too small. - Jeff
